I'm looking to get a new pair of summer shoes/sneakers. Are driving shoes solely for driving or can they be a comfortable every day shoe? A quick amazon search came up with these:

http://www.amazon.com/PUMA-Drift-Lea…

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

What makes for a good driving shoe? What do you guys wear? It seems like a thin flat bottom feels best but I've seen some that have a lot of knobs on the bottom. I have a cheap pair of dress shoes that feel pretty good and my running shoes seem to make shifts a little sloppier. $60 +/- budget.

I used to wear some Pumas that were driving shoe shaped. They took a little while to break in for walking, but then they worked fine for walking and great for driving.

Get a cheap pair leather soled loafers. Loafers with those little studs/bumps are the worst. I don't really like Puma's because they are too narrow for a decent heel-toe. But I really enjoy driving in my Supra Cuttler sneakers.

Proper racing shoes are far too hot for day to day wandering about, plus you look like a complete fool. Tod's are the best as far as I'm concerned. Having said that in terms of regular shoes my boring old Chuck Taylors are damn brilliant driving shoes.

I expect the sole of a driving shoe would wear out very quickly if you did much walking in it.

Knobs on the bottom of the shoe can be obnoxious with some pedals. On the FiST there's raised rubber on the pedals that gets in the grooves between the knobs causing some awkwardness.

For my commute/work shoes I've got a number of various driver soled Cole-Haans. They're good for driving and decent enough looking that I can get away with them in a suit at the office. For the weekend I've always used Pilotis. I love those shoes. Current pair are the G16s. I think they're back in business now so they shouldn't be hard to find like they were a while ago.

I wear New Balance minimus zeros when I take my car to the track.

They have a VERY (less than 7mm) thin sole that is an even thickness from toe to heel. They have a small toe box and are well ventilated. I find that with how much pedal feel I get through them my downshifts and braking are a whole lot smoother.

They are pretty comfortable to wear around as well, but the thin soles can be fatiguing if you spend all day on your feet.

Well my favorite shoes of all time are Clark's Desert Boots, and they are my favorite shoe to drive in, although they are far from being a driving shoe. Also, Onitsuka Tiger California 78s are great, as are vans Sk8 Hi's, and Adidas Busenitz, although the last 2 are dedicated skate shoes. If you like Chuck Taylors, I suggest PF Flyers because they have a similar feel with a bonus of being actually walkable.

For just daily driving and what not you should definitely look into some Adidas Samba Handball Spezials. They come pretty much already broken in and they're great for driving. I've been wearing them for years and I love them for driving/fuckin' around on the dialy.

The cheapest option—and the one that allows for the most pedal feel—would be to just drive sans-shoes. But I'm biased, and I realize that not everyone is comfortable driving without.

I'm a big fan of Piloti, they feel nice and I can't seem to wear through them like other shoes I've had. (the tan laguna's were about a hundred, and the Avus's were like $80)

But for more of a casual shoe thats also good are Onitsuka Tiger's, they come in all kinds of color combos and are closer to your price (40-90 bucks depending on what you get).

I love driving in all 3.

I don't care for any of the Puma shoes myself.

I have these and I like them:

I have a puma pair pretty similar to the ones you showed, and the pedal feel is a lot better than my normal day to day shoes. Makes me want to take them out again, I live in the northeast so I don't take out shoes I want to keep for a while in the winter here.

Someone else said this too, but my hightop converse (Chuck Taylors) actually have really good pedal feel because the soles are relatively thin.

Good suggestions. I'll probably take a look at the Tigers. They look like they would be nice enough for the office (pretty casual here) and for every day.

I have Old Navy sneakers that look kinda like those and they are pretty good. I feel like they aren't office material tho. Definitely wouldn't want proper racing shoes, I agree I'd look pretty foolish.

I had a pair of pumas years ago and loved them. They would make my feet sore when walking but that was only when I was doing miles at a time. I like how I could feel everything including the little warning bumps at the edge of the T stops.

Yea they have come up a few times. I just don't think they would work for the office.

I'm now a believer in spending a little more for quality because of those shoes though. 2 and a half years now and they still are almost like new, wore through a set of laces but thats it.

I have those exact shoes you are looking at and use them all the time for driving. They are great for pedal feel but are a little uncomfortable if you are standing around and walking on them for long periods of time.

I've been saying that for years, you're better off spending more now for something higher quality than spending just as much for cheap stuff over the same time period.

I'm very fond of Converse's Jack Purcell, which you should be able to find well within your price range. They're a little more refined and better looking than Chucks, but they still have the low, narrow profile and thin sole. Protip: the Jack Purcells have a slightly thicker insole than Chucks; I replace the insoles in mine with basic arch support insoles like QuikStrides (damn getting old), which actually gives better feel through the sole.

I got the Tigers. They are amazingly comfortable and have good pedal feel. The only thing i'm not too sure about is how sharp the heel is. It seems like its going to wear through the floor mat quick. I got tan/blue stripes.

Sweet! Glad to hear you like them, and I'm 99% sure the wear will be the other way around.
